What are clear aligners?

Clear aligners are an orthodontic treatment that straightens your teeth with a series of transparent, removable trays, custom-made from a 3D image of your mouth. Each aligner applies gentle, controlled forces that move your teeth little by little, right up to the final position your orthodontist has planned.

At Smilestudio we're a dental clinic focused on orthodontics in El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz), near Naval Station Rota. Almost all our patients arrive with the same concern: they want to fix their smile, but they don't want to spend months with metal braces on show. Clear aligners solve exactly that.

The main difference from traditional orthodontics is that nothing is bonded to your teeth: you put the clear trays in and take them out yourself and, day to day, hardly anyone notices you're wearing them. That's why more and more patients across the province of Cádiz are choosing this system.

How do clear aligners work?

Starting from the 3D scan of your mouth, your orthodontist digitally designs the path your teeth need to follow. That path is divided into small stages, and each stage corresponds to one aligner.

We give you a numbered sequence of clear trays. Each one is slightly different from the last and shifts your teeth a few tenths of a millimeter. When one aligner's wearing time is up, you move on to the next, and so on until the plan is complete.

For treatment to progress as planned, clear aligners need to be worn most of the day: typically around 20–22 hours, taking them out only to eat, to drink anything other than water, and to brush. This is the key point: they work to the extent that they're worn.

In some cases, small tooth-colored attachments are placed: tiny bumps that help the aligner grip better and perform specific movements. They're removed when treatment ends.

Benefits of clear aligners

Discreet

It's the number one reason our patients choose clear aligners. You can speak in a meeting, teach a class or have your photo taken without the appliance stealing the show.

Easy hygiene

Because they're removable, you brush and floss just as you did before you started. There are no wires or brackets for plaque to build up on, which helps keep your gums healthy.

Comfortable

They're smooth and follow the contour of your teeth. With no metal edges rubbing your cheek and no wires poking out, emergency visits for breakages tend to be far less frequent than with fixed braces.

Eat whatever you like

You take the aligner out to eat, so you don't give anything up and you don't need to worry about hard or sticky foods.

Fewer check-ups

They tend to be less frequent than with braces and, on top of that, part of the follow-up can be done by video call: very handy if you work away or live some distance from El Puerto de Santa María.

The process, step by step, at Smilestudio

This is the path we'll walk together at our clinic in El Puerto de Santa María:

Which cases can clear aligners treat?

Aligner treatment can now handle the vast majority of cases, from the simplest to significant bite problems. These are the most common reasons people come to our clinic in El Puerto de Santa María:

Crowding

Overlapping or rotated teeth due to lack of space. By far the most common case.

Gaps between teeth (diastemas)

Spaces that affect the look of your smile.

Open bite

The upper and lower teeth don't meet when you close your mouth.

Crossbite

One or more upper teeth sit inside the lower ones when you bite.

Overbite or deep bite

The upper teeth cover the lower ones too much.

Relapse after previous orthodontics

Very common in adults who had braces when they were young and have seen their teeth shift again over the years. These tend to be shorter treatments.

Preparation for other treatments

Aligning the teeth before placing veneers, to be as conservative as possible.

That said, let's be honest: not every case is the same. There are situations where the orthodontist may recommend braces or a combination of both systems. Every case is assessed individually, and at your free visit we'll tell you frankly what's right for you.

Clear aligners or braces: which is right for me?

Neither system is better than the other in the abstract: they're different tools, and what matters is which one fits your case and your life.

Clear aligners clearly win on discretion, hygiene and comfort. They're removable, contain no metal and let you eat without restrictions. In return, they demand commitment: if you don't wear them for the required time, treatment slows down.

Braces are fixed to the teeth, so they don't depend on the patient's cooperation and remain a very solid, predictable option, especially for certain complex movements and for younger patients who find it hard to be consistent.

At Smilestudio we've worked with both systems for years, so we don't need to "sell" either one: at your first visit we assess your case and explain the pros and cons of each option.

Clear aligners at any age

Adults

Most of our patients are adults who want to fix their smile without it showing in their working or social life. Many had braces when they were young and have seen their teeth shift again.

Teenagers

They achieve the same results as with conventional orthodontics, without the visual impact of braces at an age when image matters a lot. It does require commitment to the wearing hours.

Children

From the age of 6 or 7, when the adult teeth start to come through, we assess whether a first phase of preventive orthodontics is advisable. See kids' orthodontics.

Price and financing

The price depends on the complexity of each case and the number of aligners you need. That's why we don't quote generic figures: we give you your exact price at the first visit, and that price doesn't change.

Frequently asked questions

How long does clear aligner treatment take?

It varies with the complexity of each case. In general, mild cases usually take between 6 and 12 months, while more complex ones may need roughly 12 to 24 months. Wear time matters too: keeping the aligners in for the required hours each day is decisive for treatment to progress as planned. At your free first visit at Smilestudio we'll give you a personalized time estimate.

Do clear aligners hurt?

It's normal to feel slight pressure or discomfort for the first few days with each new set of aligners, since they're gradually moving your teeth. That feeling usually fades within two or three days and is considerably milder than what's associated with traditional braces. Many patients tell us they only notice it when they start a new aligner.

Can I eat with my aligners in?

No, aligners must be taken out to eat and to drink anything other than water. In fact, that's one of their big advantages: you can keep enjoying all your favorite foods without the restrictions that come with braces. Just remember to brush your teeth, or at least rinse well, before putting your clear trays back in.

How often do I need a check-up?

Check-ups are usually every 4–6 weeks, less often than with conventional braces, although the interval is adjusted to each case. At each visit to our clinic in El Puerto de Santa María we check your progress, answer your questions and hand you your next aligners. Part of the follow-up can also be done by video call, which is very convenient if you live elsewhere in the Bay of Cádiz or travel for work.

Do clear aligners work for every case?

They're effective in most cases: crowding, gaps between teeth, open bite, overbite and crossbite, among others. Even so, there are complex situations where the orthodontist may recommend braces or a combination of both systems. Every case is assessed individually: at Smilestudio we examine your mouth free of charge and frankly recommend the treatment that suits you.

How much do clear aligners cost?

The price depends on the complexity of the case, the number of aligners needed and the expected duration, so there's no single figure for everyone. At Smilestudio your first visit is free: we study your case with the 3D scanner and give you a personalized quote with a fixed, all-inclusive price. That price includes the in-person and video-call visits you need and any cleanings you require, and you're welcome to ask us about financing.

Can you see clear aligners? Are they really invisible?

The trays are made from a very thin, transparent material that hugs the contour of your teeth, so day to day they go practically unnoticed. At normal conversation distance, most people won't realize you're wearing them. In some cases, small tooth-colored attachments are placed and, looking very closely, they may be slightly visible. Even so, the difference in appearance compared with metal braces is huge.

Do clear aligners work for adults of any age?

Yes. Teeth can be moved at any age as long as the gums and bone are healthy, so there's no age limit for starting. In fact, many of our adult patients in El Puerto de Santa María had braces when they were young and have seen their teeth shift again over the years. What we always do before starting is check the condition of the gums and bone.
